The LA Times reveals that in recent weeks, Sony has been in negotiation with anonymous studios in recent weeks as they prepare to launch an online movie service for the PlayStation 3, possibly as early as this Summer. Included initially would be movies and TV shows which would be transmitted via the internet to the PS3, much like the system Xbox 360 now uses, one would suppose. Sony's success in the market has not been tremendous, with Movielink being sold to Blockbuster last year, and Sony Connect, an iTunes-like store that shut down in March. But hey, people were judging Blu-ray based on Sony's prior efforts in proprietary format, too, including the recent UMD, so who knows? Speaking of Apple, after the beatdown their iPod gave Sony's Walkman division, "They've got to get a win in the digital, and I'd say on the electronic delivery side of the business," said Kurt Scherf, an analyst with Parks Associates who studies technology in the home. "That's where the future is. They've got to establish a toehold in that space."
