So last week Tecmo unveiled a trailer for Dead or Alive: Dimensions for the 3DS. Was pretty exciting, as not only did it show off some pretty impressive visual graphics, it also showed off a stage based upon the Metroid universe, even a stage hazard Ridley shooting fireballs at the fighters. The most exciting part of the trailer, however, would have to go to the appearance of Samus leaving her morphball near the end. It left many speculating that Samus could make an appearance in the game as an actual fighter.
Seems this is not the case. In a conversation with EuroGamer, Team Ninja boss Yosuke Hayoshi said that Samus is not a playable fighter in the game. Rather, she'll show up and assist fighters depending on certain circumstances in the fight. DoA games are already accustomed to external elements in a fight making an actual impact, so having Samus and Ridley interact with the fighters is pretty cool, although the idea of Samus as a playable fighter in her Zero Suit fits DoA as much as Kratos fits Mortal Kombat. That is to say, it would wok perfectly.
Metroid: Other M is shaping up to be just as divisive as Metroid Prime, the first true re-imagining of the series, was when it came out in 2002. Curiously, the game is largely going back to the franchise's roots, with the third person respective restored and an emphasis on 2D exploration. What is it that's got some fans so riled up, then?
Watch the trailer, then hit the jump for some gameplay footage and speculation.
One Nintendo icon who was conspicuous by her absence during the Nintendo 64 era was Samus Aran. Coming off a strong showing in Super Metroid, some were hopeful that a brilliant new 3D Metroid (or simply "Samus," as seemed to be hinted at the time) game would follow in the footsteps of Super Mario 64 and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, but it never came.
However, it seems that one modder has decided to rectify this seeming oversight in Nintendo's history by transplanting Samus into the lead role of Ocarina of Time:
According to their video's info on YouTube, this is just the beginning of a larger mod they call "Metroid 64." Should it come to fruition, it should be interesting to see.
If I had to guess, I'd say they likely used the Samus model from Super Smash Bros., which was the closest thing we got to an N64 Metroid. It's too bad she seems unable to shoot, though, and I wonder if jumping will even feature in the end product.
Still, it's hard not to wonder what the full experience would have been like when you see her come face to face with King Dodongo. But in reality, it would be well into the following generation before Samus would make her return, and in first-person, no less.
And over a decade later, we may finally see what a non-FP Metroid will be like when Nintendo and Team Ninja present Metroid: Other M, which they assert will come later this year.
Once people picked up their jaws from the floor following Nintendo's big reveal of their collaboration with Team Ninja, Metroid: Other M, concern soon set in. After all, Team Ninja, while great developers, are rather well know for their-- to put it nicely-- exhibitive admiration of the female body. Is it really wise to put one of gaming's most beloved and strongest perceived female protagonists into their open hands?
Fortunately, Yosuke Hayashi, the new boss of Team Ninja following the departure of Tomonobu Itagaki, offers his assurance that there is no cause for alarm; they're going to make sure Samus stays a classy lady.
"Every female character in our games is as attractive as possible, both inside and out," Hayashi told Kotaku. "There has to be something attractive."
"But as long as we provide that in the one place - the inside - that's what's important with this game."
Well said.

Some video game characters, it's only too easy to find merchandise featuring their visage. Mario. Link. Master Chief. Sonic. Even Mega Man.
Then there are those who are popular, and yet seem to have only a bare minimum of merchandise devoted to bearing their likeness. One such example is Samus Aran, of Metroid fame.
Not that she hasn't had merchandise, though it's become a more recent trend. Even so, the bulk of it has been in the form of expensive statues and the like. At least she has taste.
But one other item which arrived earlier this decade came from a company known as Joyride Studios. Seen at right, their Samus action figure wasn't exactly spectacular.
All I can say about this is wow. We've already seen an incredible replica of the gun from Portal this year, and now we have a Samus Aran cosplay suit that just about blows it out of the water.
Under the alias of Yuki, this Brazillian cosplayer, ThaÃs Jussim, created this 23 pound costume. In adding to the believability of the costume, it also sports over 70 LEDs, a shot to its potential in my opinion.
Now, I'm pretty sure you want more photos, so check them out, and don't be afraid to visit her website as it has plenty more other costumes for your visual entertainment (including Cloud Strife and Jill Valentine). It seems some cosplayers (and designers) are stepping up their game, and I'm enjoying it. How about you? What other awesome replicas and/or costumes would you like to see this year?
[Thanks to Marcelo Colin for photographing the image to the right!]
So apparently Vicarious Visions was planning on including Samus and Link in Marvel: Ultimate Alliance. I've not a clue how that info slipped by me, but this footage seems genuine enough. Give it a look!
