Old school fans usually have a soft spot for retro games that are punishing and even a little frustrating. Classic games like Contra, Super Mario Bro

The Senior Director of Development at Retro Studios talks to Kombo about Donkey Kong Country Returns.
It has just been announced that they are bringing back DK and crew once again, retro style. That's right we are going back to the jungle. Impressions and released date after the cut.
File this one under extremely bizarre: Retro Studios, who haven't been heard from since Metroid Prime Trilogy, are, according to IGN, apparently set to unveil their latest project at Nintendo's E3 press event this week. While still based on a popular Nintendo franchise, Retro's next project will be a major shift for the developer, as they will be taking on the star of Nintendo's very first hit game, Donkey Kong. If this turns out to be true, it'll be the first individual game starring good old DK since 2007's abysmal Donkey Kong: Barrel Blast. Yes, DK's history of games isn't as renowned as Samus', but Retro may be the one to change it. Now, what the hell will it be?
I wonder if there was some sort of mix-up in communication between Capcom and Nintendo as they prepared for Monday's Nintendo Download, thus leading to the Virtual Console release of Final Fight 3. After all, it seems the oldschool Capcom game everyone is thinking about lately is Street Fighter 2010: The Final Fight, which would have made a more fitting (though not necessarily better) way to kick off the year. First up, there's the Angry Video Game Nerd, language and all, who looks back at not only SF2010, but the original Street Fighter, Final Fight, and Street Fighter: The Movie: The Game as well. Be warned of language, as always: Video Games | ScrewAttack | Angry Video Game Nerd: Street Fighter 2010XBox 360 | Playstation 3 | Nintendo Wii In addition, 1UP's Retro Gaming Blog is going to look at the game in the coming week. In addition, it disputes that the Japanese version had nothing to do with Street Fighter. Of course, with the characters and stage from Final Fight appearing in Super Street Fighter IV, which will be released in 2010, I wonder if that game isn't somehow more deserving of the title.
Last week gave rise to some sad news, as Xseed Games revealed that in order for them to bring the sequel to Retro Game Challenge to North America, the first game would have to sell around 100,000 units. And unfortunately, it appears that they are well short of their goal. Disappointed by this news, one fan of the title decided to see what they could do to encourage more people to purchase the title. Hence, the Retro Game Challenge Challenge was born.
The Namco Bandai game Retro Game Challenge, based on the Japanese television show Game Center CX and localized for American audiences by Xseed, is a blast from gaming's past that delivers a fun experience to anyone who grew up loving games in the 80's. And the game (to say nothing of the show which inspired it) is popular enough to warrant a sequel. However, it appears that the likelihood of it being released on our shores is dismal at best. How can this be? After all, it seems like all who have played it have loved it.
Recently, we caught wind of the rumor that Retro Studios had been working on a new Zelda title, but that such is no longer the case. So, what have they been working on, then? We thought for sure that we would see the fruits of their labor at E3, but it was not to be. Or was it? According to N+Dpad, Creative Director Jason Vandenberghe of Red Steel 2 says "We worked very closely with the guys over at Retro Studios, and the producer of Metroid Prime came to work with us and gave us a lot of insight into how they handled things." As a result, the site says that people who have had the opportunity to go hands-on with the game reportedly commented that the controls felt very much like those of Metroid Prime.
