All throughout development Heavy Rain felt like it was going to be one of those games that was brilliant but unappreciated. Snooty gamers were prepared to lump it into the category of "games I played but you didn't; which makes me better than you" alongside the likes of Psychonauts and Beyond Good and Evil. But a funny thing happened on the road to obscurity, Heavy Rain sold like bonkers, and what was once believed to be an art house game quickly turned into a giant blockbuster. Turns out, it's not just consumers who were surprised by the title's positive reception, even the company that made the game was shocked. Cage's comments after the break.
If ever there was a game which would obviously benefit from motion controls, it's Heavy Rain. Its control scheme is already set up to mimic physical movements as much as is possible with an analog stick. So it's a natural next step for it to take advantage of the Move hardware. Ross Alexander of the European PlayStation.Blog today revealed the first screenshots of the new edition of the game. He also shared a few details on the new version, too. And it's good news all round. Press X to hit the jump.
This past April, some Heavy Rain fans were able to get a taste of DLC for the game in the form of Heavy Rain Chronicles: Episode One -- The Taxidermist. Heavy Rain Chronicles was is a collection of episodic DLC that allows the player to experience the events that lead up to the events in Heavy Rain. The Taxidermist allowed players to take control of Madison and was released three months ago. What's with the hold up? It looks like we now have an explanation to this mystery -- and yes, it's Move-related. Hit the jump for more.
Heavy Rain's DLC has been put on "indefinite hold" according to the game's developer, Quantic Dream. Speaking to Game Informer at E3, Quantic Dream said that Sony had encouraged the development studio to concentrate its effort on implementing Move controls into the original game now that Move has a definite release date.
Unique Features, a film studio started by former New Line executives Bob Shaye and Michael Lynne, is close to acquiring the film rights to Heavy Rain. The move shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone in the gaming industry, and it's obvious that with a strong plot and serious theme, Heavy Rain could be a strong film. But will it entice gamers? And will it be able to differentiate itself from other thrillers being produced by Hollywood? Read on for commentary and analysis of this breaking news.
Heavy Rain was a title that received mixed reviews across the hardcore spectrum. Some liked that it tried to do something different. Others disliked it for its somewhat clumsy execution of that something different. Regardless of whether your were in the yay or nay category Heavy Rain has done pretty well for itself. Quantic Dream's narrative opus recently broke the 1 million sales mark, and according to co-founder David Cage, the sky is likely the limit. Find out more after the break.
The director of Heavy Rain has encouraged game publishers to take more risks in the content of what they produce. He is emboldened by the success of his game which exceeded his own expectations. David Cage, in an interview with the guardian.co.uk Games Blog, said that reception to Heavy Rain proves that there is an audience for games with more mature content. "As Heavy Rain is very positively received, I believe it clearly states that gamers are eager to play different types of games," he said. "Publishers should dare to take more risks and give more importance to creativity."
Developers are constantly looking for a way to assure pre-orders of their game. With the release of Heavy Rain, Quantic Dream gave consumers who pre-ordered Chapter 1 of the prequel, entitled The Taxidermist . Today, via the PlayStation Blog, Sony announced that they will be releasing The Taxidermist for download via the PlayStation Network on Thursday, April 1st for $4.99. Can Sony entice consumers into buying? Get our thoughts after the break.
Admiration from one's peers always feels good. It must be especially nice for developer Quantic Dream to hear a competitor fawn so sloppily over their game, Heavy Rain. Peter Molyneux -- the man most recently responsible for the Fable series of games on the Xbox 360 -- said several nice things about Heavy Rain to Wired writer Frank Rose. According to Joystiq, Molyneux said about Quantic Dream's big hit, "I recommend anyone who wants to start to see the first glimpses of the future of video games to go out and buy it."
