Halo 2 Online Dies for Real

Halo 2's online multiplayer has now completely shut down for the last time, almost a month after its official death along with Xbox Live on the original Xbox. The deaths of games as popular as this are strong evidence for the disadvantages of the peer-to-peer gaming that is standard on consoles. Live user "APACHE N4SIR" was the last person seen in an online game of Halo 2 until the game kicked him last night. This brings an end to some impressive dedication on the part of original Xbox fans. Officially, Microsoft pulled the plug on Halo 2 along with the rest of Xbox Live for original Xbox games on April 15th. However, a handful of fans kept the game alive by simply leaving their Xboxes on and connected. APACHE N4SIR's Xbox would have been on for at least 26 days by the end. That's dedication, but it also highlights a problem endangering many of today's most played games.

Bungie Reminisces as Halo 2 Loses LIVE Support

Yesterday, Microsoft announced that Xbox LIVE's support for original Xbox titles will no longer be in effect come April 15th. According to Bungie's official site this will mark the end of what has been an amazing and emotional chapter in the history of the Halo franchise. "We're all saddened at the realization that an era is coming to an end but looking back we're incredibly fortunate to have had such a great run and such strong support from our fans." As such, April 14th will serve as a day to give Halo 2 the sendoff it deserves. Bungie promises, "one final farewell and one final opportunity for all of you to kick our asses at Halo 2."

Continued Support for Halo 2 Limits Xbox Live Friends Lists

There is no doubt that Halo 2 was the game responsible for initiating the continued level of success we see today with the Microsoft's online service. However, it appears that support for the game is now limiting the Live experience from moving forward. Ironic, no? According to G4, Microsoft is currently supporting the original Xbox Live framework which only supports 100 players. In order to expand the friends list cap beyond 100, it looks like Microsoft will have to dissolve the original Xbox Live service, which will in turn no longer support Halo 2 online. It looks like Halo 2's current popularity is making this a very difficult decision for Microsoft. At this time, there are no official plans to disband the original Xbox Live service, so it looks like gamers will have to make due with only 100 friends for now.
