Big news from the Tokyo Game Show - Capcom has just revealed a new entry in the Devil May Cry franchise, and it's a bit of a shake-up from previous title Devil May Cry 4. As such, it's titled simply DmC, indicating it stands apart from the numbered series, which has remained largely the same for the last nine years. Hit the jump for more details and a glut of debut screens.
Following the reveals of Lords of Shadow and its place as a clean break for the Castlevania franchise, there have been a variety of mixed opinions. Some have been thrilled with the prospect of a Kojima-produced Castlevania title, while others feel that longtime series Producer Koji Igarashi might have been snubbed in the move. And then there is the gameplay. Upon seeing the trailers, there have been people excited by it, while others still have dismissed it as a "God of War/Devil May Cry sort of game." But at GamesCom 2009, Producer David Cox explained that isn't so much the case.
More Twitter news for you today, and this time it involves Capcom and E3. Capcom made a "rumor-busting post to their Twitter, in which they said: "Hot rumor bust of the day: Capcom E3 Mystery Title #2 is not -- repeat, NOT -- Devil May Cry 5. Now, what do you think it is?" TravDiddy then responded, asking: "@Capcom_Unity Is mystery game #2 a new IP or is going to be a sequel to an existing franchise?" They in turn said "@TravDiddy Ooo, yer asking for a big hint. So: established Capcom IP." Another, JSchmiez, asked if it was a remake of some sort, to which Capcom replied "It is NOT a remake". So... we now know some of what it isn't. Any guesses as to what it is?
Today, Capcom of Japan proudly announced in a press release that they have officially shipped ten million copies of the Devil May Cry franchise worldwide. Mind, that seems to be accounting for all versions and games since the release of the first title for the PlayStation 2 in 2001. The latest in the series, Devil May Cry 4, has had record-breaking sales of 2.2 million since its release in 2008. "Devil May Cry 4 has been highly praised as not only a video game," Capcom notes, "but as a piece of art as well. It recieved an award for excellence at the Japan Game Awards 2008, and was selected as an entertainment division jury recommended work at the 2008 Japan Media Arts Festival."
Capcom has issues a press release today to inform the masses that their latest hit, Devil May Cry 4, has shipped over 2 million units worldwide since launch, making it the fastest selling title in the series' history. The game is available for Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's PlayStation 3, with a PC version soon to follow. Since the series' first release in 2001, the series has amassed over 9 million sales around the world, making it one of Capcom's pillar franchises.
Devil May Cry 4 for the Xbox 360 hasn't exactly lit up the charts in Japan, but elsewhere may yet be poised to tell a different story. Capcom reports, in an ununusual instance, that Microsoft LIVE techs have shared with them that as of Saturday, Feb. 9, 2008, the Devil May Cry 4 demo has been downloaded a million times by 360 gamers worldwide. What's more, it's not only the first download of the year to hit the million mark, but one of the fastest in the history of the service to reach the milestone. The demo was released on January 24th, and averaged about 25,000 downloads a day. Seems that the people really need their Nero. Naturally, Capcom sends their thanks out to the fans who have made the demo (and the game) "popular like a donut shop next door to a Weight Watchers."
The fourth installment in Capcom's popular Devil May Cry series finally went on sale in Japan yesterday, and the sales numbers are in. Taken from Ameblo.jp/sinobi via Ripten, it appears that the PlayStation 3 version handily trounced its Xbox 360 counterpart at 140k units moved, versus the latter's mere 30k, almost 5-1 in spite of a ten dollar difference between the two. With the install base seen in Japan, it comes as little surprise. But while the 60% sell through is pretty good, it wasn't able to take on the onslaught of the first day of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, which sold 500k for an 80% sell through.
Is Devil May Cry 4 a worthy sequel, or should this game be sent to video game hell?
