Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 expected to break franchise record

Call of Duty just keeps topping itself with the most recent Black Ops 2 expected to achieve record sales.

The bar is set by Cowen & Company analyst Doug Creutz who noted, "Post-holiday sales trends for BO2 have been significantly better than those for last year's Modern Warfare 3, and we expect BO2 to slightly beat the previous franchise high watermark of the orginal Black Ops on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 platforms across its life cycle."

In December of 2012, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 crossed the $1 billion mark in worldwide retail sales, just 15 days after its launch. It achieved this feat in even less time than its predecessor Modern Warfare 3, which took 16 days. Black Ops 2's earnings have even placed it above certain Hollywood films; life-to-date sales for the Call of Duty franchise exceeded worldwide theatrical box office receipts for Harry Potter and Star Wars, two of the most successful movie franchise of all time.

As evidenced by Black Ops 2's sales, Call of Duty continues to be a success for Activision -- even during a down market. Looking ahead, Activision is expected to announce the2013's entry in the Call of Duty series no later than E3. I'm predicting it will be revealed alongside the next Xbox, rumored for a May 21st unveiling.
