Although Nintendo of America's Reggie Fils-Aime already prematurely spoiled this news, Nintendo officially confirmed that more than 20 million physical copies of 3DS games have been sold in the U.S. The stats were revealed in the latest NPD Group games industry report. This milestone was aided by strong March sales of Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity, and Fire Emblem Awakening.

Portable hardware sales experienced "strong declines," although sales for the Nintendo 3DS actually grew 9% over last March. Additionally, 3DS software sales increased over 50% from last March, as well.

Looking ahead, Nintendo expects this momentum to grow as the company prepares for an impressive slate of 3DS software releases including LEGO City Undercover: The Chase Begins on April 24, Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D on May 24, Animal Crossing: New Leaf on June 9 and Mario and Luigi: Dream Team on Aug. 11. And beyond that we have even more exclusive 3DS titles. Revealed during this week's Nintendo Direct was a new Zelda game set in the world of A Link to the Past, as well as a new Mario Party.
