NewsMutant Mudds' long-term struggle with Steam just got a little easier
Mutant Mudds is a popular game. It's available on the 3DS eShop, PC, and iOS, and it fits well alongside other indie titles like VVVVVV and Offspring Fling. That's why Jools Watsham of developer Renegade Kid can't understand why it's failed to launch on Steam. Twice.
In a blog post republished on Gamasutra this week, Watsham explained how Valve had previously "determined that Steam is not a good fit for distribution" for Mutant Mudds.
The developer had a hard time believing that because "due to the high review scores and fan reaction we received for Mutant Mudds on the 3DS, I assumed the game was at least above average and at least on-par with the quality and genre of games currently found on Steam," wrote Watsham.
When Steam Greenlight — essentially a "popularity contest" — launched in August, it seemed like the perfect answer. But that hasn't been the case. At the time, Watsham said Mutant Mudds was sitting at No. 82 on the Greenlight list. It's possible that the blog post raised awareness because the platformer has since moved up to spot No. 77 with 17,748 "yes" votes, according to an update today.
The increased support may prove Watsham wrong. In his post, he wrote, "At this rate I can’t see how Mudds will ever be deemed suitable for a Steam release."
He added, "How can a game that has been accepted with open arms on one platform be shut out on another? It is truly a fascinating case study."
