ASHNR '98'

uhrad.com - Case #2

Clinical History:A 42 year old female presents with fullness in the retromolar triangle.

Schwannoma

Findings: There is a nonhomogeneous mass in the left parapharyngeal space. There is no associated bone destruction or calcification.

Discussion: A wide differential diagnosis can be generated with this nonspecific process. The differential diagnosis includes a minor salivary gland tumor, extranodal lymphoma, plasmacytoma, sarcoma, hemangiopericytoma and tumors of neurogenic origin. There are no imaging findings which specifically lead one to the diagnosis of a tumor of neurogenic origin. 15 to 20% of parapharyngeal space masses have a neurogenic origin although minor salivary gland tumors are still the most common.
